Intermountain Healthcare has been thinking holistically and creatively about the care they provide for over 40 years, working towards their mission statement, Helping people live the healthiest lives possible. ®

BUILDING A FOUNDATION THROUGH CUBING

Intermountain had some unique supply chain challenges to overcome when they were planning to build a new fulfillment center.
Intermountain Healthcare Uses Cubiscan

Their current fulfillment center is

responsible for handling over 4,500 SKUs,

each one representing an item of unique size, shape, and weight. These medical and surgical supplies then needed to be shipped to hundreds of physicians’ offices and 22 hospitals across hundreds of miles. Many of these shipments could be time-sensitive. Intermountain knew that collecting dimensional data on their products could be vital to making their new fulfillment center a success.

MINIMIZING SPACE TO MAXIMIZE PROFITS

The Cubiscan 125 was the solution to Intermountain Healthcare’s supply chain challenges. Scott Bryan, Distribution Operations Manager at Intermountain Healthcare, said,

"When we were opening our new fulfillment center, we had a blank slate and we needed this dimensional data to develop storage rules and facility operational plans."

Collecting accurate length, width, height, and weight for an item is easy. Simply place the object on the Cubiscan platform and swing the measurement gate over the object. The data can then be sent wherever it is needed. Intermountain decided to send their data to their warehouse management system. Once the data was collected, it was easy to streamline their entire fulfillment center.

Dimensioning medical supplies and SKUs“We ship our product in reusable plastic totes. Because each of our 4,500 plus items are a unique size, shape, and weight, we needed a way for our system to know how much product we can put in a tote,” said Bryan. “The Cubiscan provides this data, allowing us to maximize the use of space inside of totes and minimize the number of totes we need to send to each location. It also helps us keep the totes close to an appropriate weight and avoid excessively heavy totes. We also use the data to identify correct storage locations and maximize the efficiency of our low unit of measure operations.” Bryan estimates that,

"The biggest savings came during the original implementation of the Cubiscan 125, but Intermountain Healthcare's ongoing warehousing and shipping cost savings is around 5%, even 5 years later."
